Harley-Davidson Forty Eight Review

New Harley® Forty Eight

[Please note this review is based on a 2016 model, so prices stated reflect that]

The 2016 Forty-Eight® is better than ever! I first rode the bike around Nottingham city centre on an immersion event with Harley-Davidson® and around town it was absolutely fantastic. The new rear suspension, front forks and wider wheels have vastly improved the handling and make the bike a lot more comfortable.

So what’s new? A lot really! Fully adjustable rear shock absorbers allow you to set the bike up exactly how you want it, the front forks have been set wider apart to allow for a wider wheel which means more rubber on the road, a redesigned seat makes the bike a lot more comfortable, the air filter has been redesigned, new laser cut heat shields give the bike an even more aggressive look and that’s just to name a few!

Its was an easy bike to ride which is now even easier. The seat height is a nice and low 28 inches, perfect for me, but the taller rider will still feel comfortable because of the forward controls. It’s not particularly heavy at 247kg and what weight there is, is all low down which really helps through the corners. The Forty-Eight doesn’t have the biggest tank in the world but it’s not made for long tours, don’t get me wrong the engine could do it, but it’s made for the commutes, the cruise around town and winding country roads.

Last year the Forty-Eight® felt every bump, every pot hole and every dip in the road but this year it’s a different story because of the new cast aluminium wheels, new adjustable rear suspension and new front fork set up that make a world of difference to how this bike feels.

The price has increased slightly…the previous model was £7290 on the standard Vivid Black but the difference in how much better the bike handles is well worth the money. Vivid Black is now available for only £9675. Billet Silver, Olive Gold (very nice!), Velocity Red Sun Glow (new) are £9875 and the Hard Candy Blue or Gold flake are £10,075.

So its all good news really, slight price increase but a lot better handling, darker and more aggressive styling, better stopping power from improved brakes, new seat with better padding so you can rack up the miles in comfort and fully adjustable rear suspension. What more could you ask from a Harley®?
